Opening Winter 2025

At Shorewood Behavioral Health, located in Madison, Wisconsin, we offer premier inpatient programming for adults who are suffering from mental health concerns and substance use disorders. Through intensive care and unwavering support, we strive to help patients regain stability and find a path to healing.

Overview of Our Adult Inpatient Program in Madison, Wisconsin

The inpatient program at Shorewood Behavioral Health is a short-term option for adults who are in crisis and require urgent intervention. Patients typically stay in our adult inpatient program between seven and 10 days. However, the exact amount of time a patient spends at our behavioral health hospital can vary depending on their needs and progress.

While in our inpatient program, patients work closely with our team of professionals to outline their therapeutic goals and develop a care plan for their healing journey. Each staff member plays a crucial role in providing highly individualized support. Our goal is to make a significant difference in our patients’ lives.

Who We Serve in Our Adult Inpatient Program

In our inpatient program, we serve adults who are struggling with acute behavioral health concerns, such as:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Adjustment disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Aggression
  • Psychosis
  • Suicidal and homicidal ideation
  • Drug and alcohol addictions

Adults may deal with the lasting effects of trauma, the demands of current responsibilities, and worries about the future. These burdens can intensify mental health and addiction concerns, making it difficult to find inner peace.

A person may require inpatient support if they:

  • Are experiencing intense emotional distress
  • Find it hard to fulfill personal or professional obligations
  • Engage in behaviors that threaten their safety or the safety of others
  • Do not have a stable living environment
  • Struggle to maintain basic self-care routines
  • Have explored other support options but haven’t found the relief they need

At Shorewood, we understand that navigating the complexities of adulthood can be overwhelming. In our inpatient program, we strive to help patients regain control of their lives by offering both immediate relief and long-term solutions.

Our Approach to Adult Inpatient Care

At Shorewood Behavioral Health, we believe that a patient-centered approach is key to providing compassionate and effective adult inpatient care. We prioritize:

  • Holistic healing: We address every aspect of well-being — mental, emotional, and physical — to promote healing and resilience.
  • Individualized support: Each patient receives a customized care plan designed to meet their specific needs.
  • Patient involvement: We actively involve patients and their support networks in every stage of their journey.
  • Strengths-based perspective: Our team helps patients identify and build on their existing strengths, empowering them to set and achieve their goals.

Respect, dignity, and fairness guide all our decisions and interactions with our patients. By upholding these principles, we aim to create an environment where every adult feels valued and encouraged on their path to wellness.

Therapies & Services Offered in Our Adult Inpatient Program

In our adult inpatient program, we offer a range of therapies and services, including:

  • Basic medical care: Our medical team, which includes experienced doctors and nurse practitioners, provides essential medical care to address physical health needs and any ongoing concerns.
  • Medication management services: Adults who take medication as part of their care plan meet with a psychiatrist six days a week. Our pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians can administer medications as needed.
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT): For adults who are struggling with opioid addictions, we offer MAT, a method that combines medications with group counseling. Our psychiatrists and nurses provide these services.
  • Group therapy: Patients in our adult inpatient program can participate in multiple group therapy sessions each day. Led by our therapists, counselors, and mental health technicians, these sessions offer a supportive space where patients can share experiences, learn from others, and gain deeper insight into themselves.
  • Creative activities: Adults can participate in daily art and music therapy sessions. Guided by skilled therapists, these activities are designed to enhance self-expression and foster personal growth.

Our team may also use evidence-based practices, like:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): This therapeutic method can help patients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Through DBT, patients can learn how to manage their faciliemotions, cope with stress, and improve their communication skills.
  • Motivational interviewing: Therapists use this method to empower patients to make positive changes that align with their values.

Additionally, we may incorporate:

  • The principles of the 12-Step recovery model to support adults who are dealing with addictions
  • Specialized techniques to help patients process and heal from the effects of trauma

Benefits of Our Adult Inpatient Program

Adults who receive care in our inpatient program can benefit from:

  • 24/7 supervision: Our team is available round-the-clock to provide continuous support and monitor patients’ health.
  • Focused environment: At our Madison hospital, patients can fully engage in the healing process without the distractions of everyday life.
  • Peer support: During group therapy sessions, patients have the opportunity to interact with peers who can empathize with them, which can help them feel less alone.
  • Structured daily routine: We offer a well-organized daily schedule that includes therapy sessions, group activities, and personal time. This structured routine helps patients establish healthy habits, develop coping strategies, and find stability.

At Shorewood Behavioral Health, we understand that healing is a lifelong process, which is why we help patients plan for the future. Our team works closely with each patient to develop a detailed discharge plan that outlines their next steps. Typically, after a patient completes their inpatient stay, we recommend continued care in one of our step-down programs.
